"Hodad's"(5010 Newport Ave)

In this restaurant you can taste delicious burgers with everything to match - potatoes or onion rings. All portions are very large, so take it for two if you are not used to eating a lot. The restaurant is very busy, filled with students and surfers who have dropped in after training. So, a quiet romantic evening is unlikely to be spent here. And here they prepare divine milkshakes. Prices are naturally low.

Kono's Cafe(704 Garnet Ave, Pacific Beach)

Here you can order pancakes, bacon, eggs, simple desserts, hamburgers, toast, burritos. In short, something between a cafe and a fast food eatery. Very large portions. The perfect breakfast spot for the whole family! All food costs around $5-10. And here you can order delicious coffee with whipped cream for only $2.75. The restaurant, unfortunately, "sins" with long queues, but it's definitely worth it.

Puesto Mexican Street Food(1026 Wall St, La Jolla)

Nice Mexican restaurant. Of course, to go to this cafe and not try tacos is simply indecent! By the way, they cook right in front of you, and don't worry too much about the fact that this is a street cafe - so far no one has died after these wonderful dishes. From drinks we choose margarita (and what else!). It is very cool to run here after a tiring walk and sit at a table in the open air.

In general, it would take a very long time to talk about each of the restaurants in this wonderful city. One thing is clear for sure - it's simply unrealistic to stay hungry here, and cafes are designed for any guest, with 5 or 500 dollars in his pocket.

It is not often that I find myself in institutions that I have not read or heard anything about, but here I was invited to attend a concert in the club-restaurant "" in the Enthusiasts Highway area. Although I did not know anything about this place, I did not refuse the invitation and at the appointed time arrived at Shkolnaya Street, where I was met by a staircase leading down and an empty basement with vaulted ceilings and two adjoining halls, differing in size and decoration. The first one, at the entrance, was small, simple, bright, with a bar and posters a la “I love America”. The second room was spacious, red-brick, with higher ceilings and bright lighting.

On Friday evening there were only musicians, waiters and our friendly company in the hall. The absence of guests, of course, alerted me, but I still climbed to study the menu, which tried with all its might to imitate American bar establishments. The selection of dishes included a little bit from America, Mexico, Europe, Asia and Russia. If the names of the dishes looked ordinary, then the descriptions of the constituent ingredients caused concern. And when the waitress proudly announced that only an electric stove and grill were used in the kitchen, my mood completely sank to the bottom, where terrifying food attacked it.

The "beer platter" consisted of wings, croutons, squid and cheese sticks. There should have been more onion rings but forgot about them. The bar-pub set is standard, which could not be said about the quality of the original products. The squids were rubbery and smelled of staleness. The wings turned out snotty, with a viscous skin, barely warm and unpleasantly slimy. Cheese sticks were distinguished by elasticity and the absence of at least any taste. Black bread croutons contained so much garlic that one could not worry about any infections, with so much garlic, not a single infection would have passed.

"Chicken Caesar Salad" deserves a spot on some survival reality show, because not everyone could stand up to such a test: withered grayish-brown lettuce leaves, cold reheated tough chicken, green sauce indeterminate identity, bluish boiled quail eggs not the first freshness, layers of tasteless cheese and columns of crackers from white bread. The look is frightening, the taste is repulsive. " warm salad with veal” was also frightening both in appearance and taste. Rubbery pieces of meat, killed long before I arrived, mixed with stale, wilted lettuce leaves, took with them a softened bell pepper and dived into a green warm dangerous mayonnaise sauce with a pronounced sour taste. "Pasta carbonara" had nothing to do with Italy. I wouldn’t be surprised if the chefs “” have never tried Spaghetti Carbonara at all, but they definitely tried “vermicelli” with cream from the Soviet school canteen, because that’s what they cooked up, boiling the spaghetti to full softness and filling them with cream mixed with ham. Obviously, the chefs did not come across Mexican dishes either. Instead of "Beef Fajitas" they made something vaguely reminiscent of lecho with some tough meat interspersed. The taste is empty, without spices, without salt and pepper. But the heaviest impression was left by “Rainbow Trout” stuffed with cheese and mushrooms. The fish looked very strange, the skin was slimy with an unpleasant shade of gray, the tail was torn off, the “body” was full of holes. The taste is a mixture of dryness and the old sea, which spoke of the sad fate of this product, which spent more than one month in the freezer, and in an already spoiled state. By the way, apparently, in order to hide the troubles in the fish, they added a sharp sour sauce and seated on old, cold roasted vegetables. But it did not help. The dish was terrible.

The work of waiters from the work of cooks was no different. The staff in the empty hall worked very badly. The slow, indifferent ladies took the order for 35 minutes, the food was brought in randomly, the cutlery was not changed, the dirty plates were taken away only at an urgent request, they were in no hurry to add water, wine and disappeared with pleasure for 15–20 minutes.

The bottom line is this:

It’s not “” that lives on Shkolnaya, but some kind of fake restaurant, in which they forgot about quality food and proper service a long time ago, although, perhaps, no one ever thought about tasty and proper food there.

Largely due to the fact that I spent the best two years of my life on the Pacific coast, in a California outback called San Diego (which I may somehow tell separately), I have exceptionally pleasant memories of this place. I don’t even remember all the bars, restaurants, eateries and other stomach sweeteners that I visited there. Therefore, when by chance, just passing by, it happened in the capital city to find a restaurant under that name, nostalgic memories were sharply stirred up. And it was decided to visit this institution, in the circle of those wishing to indulge in nostalgia of comrades. And what can be said from the results of this test drive?

In general, if I had not been in the real San Diego in my life, then no complaints would have arisen. Pretty cozy place, quiet music, pretty and smart waitresses, quite reasonable prices. If it were called "a village in Europe" - everything would be fine. But damn it, it's called San Diego! Perhaps the founder was ever there, but those who now own the business - just never. Let's start with the fact that at the entrance you are greeted by lamp-lanterns with an advertisement for beer, in my opinion, Pauliner. Well, or another German, now I don’t even remember. This is, to put it mildly, a bit surprising. The guys, well, I understand, they divorced the manufacturer for free lights, but this is good in some car service, where Castrol gives its beautiful sign, and they pour everything into the engine there. Still, style is more important here. What the hell is the German beer at the entrance? Farther. A good half of the beer drunk on the US-Mexico border is just the same Mexican production. No, well, I can somehow understand if you don’t have Dos Equis or Tecate, but the usual Corona Extra or Sol could well be on the menu! Served with a slice of lime... Well, at least one purely American... As a result, there are only five types of beer on the menu: Guinness, two from Heineken and two more German.

Internal environment. Well, again - heels of plates with any mention of San Diego, and Marilyn Monroe on the wall. Well, honestly, it would be better if they posted a photo of the Coronado hotel, where she starred in the film - it would be closer to the topic. Well, it is not clear from the inner content that you are INSIDE SAN DIEGO. I just want to exclaim: Guys, everything is wrong there !!! I climbed it up and down, well, not so there!

Menu. Oh, this is a separate song. The fact that there is no cheese baked in batter as an appetizer is God bless him, we will survive. But how can a restaurant of this caliber not have a regular San Diego-style burrito? Where does half of the menu come from - European cuisine ??? Fajita alone warmed the soul, but she was alone! With a little support from beef, it is not clear from what fright it was named in the American-Mexican manner. For more than five European dishes. Honestly, Taco Bell has more than a selection of original Californian dishes. The style is not sustained absolutely, however, this should have become clear from the lanterns at the entrance.

The bottom line is simple: if you just want to have a good time in a bar without worrying about what it has to do with, then the institution is simply excellent. Clean, cozy, girls in short skirts run back and forth with dishes, everything is brought and taken away on time. But if you would like to plunge into the atmosphere of San Diego - do not go there. This is a blatant fake. And even more so, if you were in the real San Diego, and want to remember how great it was, disappointment will haunt you for at least a week.

Upd. By the way, if you want to try making burritos yourself, here is a good authentic recipe with photos of the cooking process.
