These descriptions make you want to try one of these delicious cocktails... perhaps a Margarita? But then again, good beer is also great.

When you come to a bar, your choice may not be limited to beer or vodka, because the alcohol card has something completely different. Recently, the number of craft bars where craft beer is bottled has increased. Still, cocktails and shots remain bar classics.

The main advantage of shots is their volume and saturation. A few shots of explosive taste, which must be drunk in one gulp, will make you not sit still, but indulge in wild fun on a weekend evening that will be remembered for a long time. And classic cocktails are conducive to a moderate conversation, because it is customary to stretch them. The variety of choices makes shots an absolutely unique type of cocktail, so they are suitable for everyone.

Origin

In Russian culture, the concept of "shot" originated from the English "shot drinks" - shooting drinks. That is, those that do not “stretch” like classic “long” cocktails, but are drunk in one gulp.

The volume of such drinks is from 40 to 60 ml, and corresponds to a pile. And if in Russian culture it is customary to drink homogeneous drinks from piles (vodka, cognac, sometimes whiskey), then in Western culture they are mixed, turning them into cocktails.

Shots appeared not because of the sophistication of tastes, but for a forced reason. At a time when prohibition was raging in the United States, bars still operated without experiencing a shortage of alcohol.

The problem was its quality, and the people behind the bar mixed different syrups and added whiskey, brandy and rum to the surrogate. Their popularity did not dry out after the repeal of Prohibition, despite the low quality of alcohol, because their appearance was attractive.

Bright, multi-layered, beautiful shots demanded attention and forced people to buy such cocktails when good alcohol had already appeared on the market, replacing home-made surrogate.

cocktails now

Now such cocktails have nothing in common with those that were poured in bars at the beginning of the 20th century - now the basis is, as a rule, liqueurs, which allow, due to different density, to make the drink multi-layered and multi-colored.

Strong alcohol is often used, which is located at the bottom of the pile. With each new layer there should be a less dense and less alcoholic drink. Some cocktails are topped with whipped cream.

Many shots are very sweet, as the base is liqueurs or various fruit and berry liqueurs. This applies to low-alcohol cocktails, where the components are distributed according to the degree of sugar reduction. Below are the sweetest and densest, on top - more liquid.

There are several types of shots:

  1. Sweet and low alcohol. They are based on liqueurs, juices and syrups (curacao, grenadine).
  2. Medium strength cocktails where drinks of different temperatures are mixed. Often a shot of espresso is added to a strong drink like cognac.
  3. Strong cold cocktails. The main ingredients are vodka, tequila, cognac, whiskey or gin. Usually one low-alcohol ingredient is added.
  4. Hot cocktails. Often based on vodka, cognac or absinthe. In the latter case, you need to not only drink a cocktail, but also inhale alcohol vapors.

How to use

Shots should be drunk in one gulp so that you feel the full taste of all the ingredients. Otherwise, you will simply be out of work if you stretch each shot, like cocktails like Long Island.

If you are worried about the strength of the drink, you will certainly have a choice of less alcoholic, and usually sweeter ones. Usually shots are served in "sets" - sets of several shots (from 4 to 8), but you can always arrange with the waiter or bartender to bring you one shot to try. And then decide what to choose.

As practice shows, girls usually order less alcoholic and sweeter cocktails, consisting of liqueurs and syrups, the strength of which ranges from 15% to 20%. Men prefer stronger drinks - from 30%.

An appetizer should be chosen based on the selected drink:

An open letter from a reader! Pulled the family out of the hole!
I was on the edge. My husband started drinking almost immediately after we got married. First, a little bit, go to the bar after work, go to the garage with a neighbor. I came to my senses when he began to come back every day very drunk, rude, drinking away his salary. It really got scary the first time I pushed. Me, then my daughter. The next morning he apologized. And so on in a circle: lack of money, debts, swearing, tears and ... beatings. And in the mornings, apologies. Whatever we tried, we even coded. Not to mention conspiracies (we have a grandmother who seemed to pull everyone out, but not my husband). After coding, I didn’t drink for six months, everything seemed to get better, they began to live like a normal family. And one day - again, he stayed at work (as he said) and dragged himself on his eyebrows in the evening. I still remember my tears that night. I realized that there is no hope. And about two or two and a half months later, I came across an alcotoxin on the Internet. At that time, I had already completely given up, my daughter left us altogether, began to live with a friend. I read about the drug, reviews and description. And, not particularly hoping, I bought it - there is nothing to lose at all. And what do you think?! I began to add drops to my husband in the morning in tea, he did not notice. Three days later he came home on time. Sober!!! A week later, he began to look more decent, his health improved. Well, then I confessed to him that I was slipping the drops. He reacted adequately to a sober head. As a result, I drank a course of alkotoxins, and for six months now I didn’t have to drink alcohol, I was promoted at work, my daughter returned home. I'm afraid to jinx it, but life has become new! Every evening I mentally thank the day when I found out about this miracle remedy! I recommend to everyone! Save families and even lives! Read about the remedy for alcoholism.
  1. For low-alcohol and sweet, citrus fruits or nuts are suitable.
  2. For strong - chocolate. Often such shots are washed down with water after some time, clearing the receptors. This is done in order to continue to feel the taste, which is knocked down by the strength of the components, and in order not to get too drunk.
  3. Burning cocktails are usually not eaten with anything, because this is simply not accepted. Or they seize one of the components of the cocktail, for example, if there are coffee beans at the bottom of the pile, they should be caught with a spoon and eaten.

How to set fire

Hot cocktail shots deserve special attention. First, it is spectacular and looks beautiful. Secondly, it contains strong alcohol, from which intoxication comes faster. Thirdly, their drinking culture is different, and the bartender will tell you every time how to drink this or that cocktail.

There are a few basic rules to follow in order not to get burned and ruin your evening:

  • listen to the bartender carefully;
  • do not bend over the drink;
  • remove your hair and find out if you can touch the edges of the stack with your lips (they can be very hot);
  • use the straw to drink the contents;
  • use the same tube to inhale alcohol vapors, if necessary.

Hot drink options

The most popular cocktails in this section:

  1. “Hiroshima” - Blue Kurosao syrup and cream are poured into a pile. White rum and sambuca are mixed in a martini glass, then the mixture is poured into a shot and set on fire. The cocktail is drunk with a straw.
  2. “B-53” - with the help of a knife, “Kalua” liquor is poured in a thin stream, then “Baileys”, after absinthe, and all this is set on fire.
  3. “Kazantip” - Grenadine syrup is poured in a thin stream, followed by sambuca, liqueur, absinthe and fire. Shot is drunk with a straw from the very bottom.

Explosive drinks video

So that you do not get confused when visiting a bar, pay attention to the video, which shows in detail how to drink shots (in this case, burning ones). You will see that, firstly, drinks are poured through a spoon (it can replace a knife), the bartender uses all the same ingredients (Kalua and Baileys liqueurs plus absinthe), and drinks with a straw so as not to get burned.

Consequences

A legitimate question to ask when visiting a bar. Shots are a very tricky class of drinks that you need to be careful with. Do not underestimate them because of their appearance, because they contain more alcohol than beer, and in some cases more than vodka.

Important! As for the “weak” and sweet shots, you should understand one thing. Even if it seems to you that there is little alcohol in the set (a set of several shots) that you order, this is just an appearance, since you will drink more, and intoxication from such cocktails comes later. And after a few sets, you may find yourself in an unpleasant situation. Try to eat and know when to drink.

With strong and burning cocktails, everything is more or less clear. It's worth focusing on the less sweet positions here if you want to stay sane. Sugar enhances the effect of alcohol, and it takes longer to be eliminated from the body. Keep a glass of water handy at all times to be on the safe side.

In general, in the case of shots, your main danger is not so much alcohol as it is sugar. Not only does it make you drunker, but it also causes you additional damage in the morning in the form of nausea and headaches. Therefore, try to either choose less sweet cocktails, or drink more water and snack.

conclusions

To avoid all sorts of unpleasant consequences when drinking alcohol, it is better to just control yourself. Moderation in this case is the best cure for intoxication and subsequent hangover. Try to keep track of how much you drink and eat wisely.

Every Friday, Lucky Ducky introduces readers to cocktails from various establishments in the city - from classics that have passed the test of time to author's mixes. This time the bartender of the nightclub Lift 12, Yaroslav Gusev, prepared a set of five shots for a small company.

“The shot set is a trending category of cocktails. Over the past three years, serving cocktails in the form of sets has become very popular at parties. It can be many different drinks or one cocktail poured into several glasses. We have several sets to choose from in the club. The one that we will prepare today has individual components: all shots are different and are designed to entertain the company, which, having come to Lift 12, can take several instead of one cocktail for everyone. All shots from this set are variations of well-known mixes, but due to the fact that their presentation has changed dramatically, they have become independent drinks.

"Antifreeze". It belongs to the category of organic shots, as in the original it is cooked in cucumber, but we make it in a glass, where we pour crushed ice, pour mint syrup and vodka.

"Brain tumor". Pour vodka and sweet vermouth in layers, then evenly add cream liqueur, and finally, a few drops of grenadine with a straw.

Then we make the "Bitter Pill": pour passion fruit syrup, Campari into layers and finally vodka.

In order to understand the group of cocktails called "shots" or even "shooters", you should go back to the days of "dry law"! When underground bars, in order to somehow survive, had to sell low-quality booze, which, of course, also tasted disgusting. In order to somehow return customers, the bartenders had to fantasize, create new cocktails. Namely, mixing low-quality alcohol with various flavorings - juices, syrups, coffee and other drinks that are more noble in taste.

Prohibition has passed, but the shots remain! But by no means are American bartenders the progenitors of shots, but oddly enough, the French! Back in the nineteenth century, the so-called drinks after coffee (which were drunk through a silver straw) were very popular in bohemian circles of society.

Shot cocktails nowadays

Now cocktails of the "shot" class are very popular - they pleasantly please the eye with a variety of colors and textures, have pleasant taste, are fast-acting strong alcoholic drinks, and have an almost unlimited field for the bartender's imagination!

If you're late to a party and all your friends are already a little euphoric, the easiest way to catch up with the company is to drink a cocktail shot. They are usually drunk in one gulp, or through a straw, served in small glasses, from 40 to 60 ml in volume, and decorated with slices of fruit or berries.

The most popular ingredient in such a cocktail (besides strong drinks: vodka, tequila, sambuca, etc.) is liquor, which gives not only a pleasant color to the cocktail, but also a rich taste and aroma. A variety of syrups also serve the same purpose. Grenadine is present in many cocktails - this is the heaviest drink in consistency, but whipped cream is the lightest.

The principle of preparation, at first glance, is simple - heavy layers down, light ones up. But any experienced bartender will tell you that it is not so easy. An important role is played by the skill level of the bartender and, of course, the supply of "tools"!

Of course, it is not difficult to guess - these are cocktails where the ingredients in the glass are arranged in layers in a strict sequence, from denser to less dense. Density is measured in kg/m3. In such cocktails, the most dense are syrups, liqueurs (almost all) and vermouths (Martini or Campari), the least dense are rum, vodka and whiskey.

When preparing, you should also take into account the color range of cocktails - after all, the appearance of the drink is almost the main argument when choosing it! As a rule, the most popular shots are Long Island Ice Tea, B-52, Russian Flag and Pina Colada cocktails - the work of legendary bartenders who equate the cooking process with art, a real show!

Cooking steps

So, the preparation steps. If you are new to this business, then it is not at all necessary to choose certain recipes, just turn on your imagination! First you need to decide what kind of cocktails you would like to make, and what you have in stock for this. Almost all ingredients will do, from vodka to banal cola or juice. The main thing in this drink is to serve it beautifully! Pour into cocktail glasses or special shooters. From the dishes, you will also need a cocktail spoon for the best effect of the distribution of layers.

The first layer can be poured directly from the bottle and on the eye, but try not to splash it and not get on the rim of the glass, otherwise the appearance of the following layers may deteriorate. You will have to tinker with the next step: take a clean bath spoon, turn it upside down and press it against the wall of the glass, just above the edge of the first layer. Gently and slowly pour the second layer onto the spoon and see how evenly it falls on the first! The main thing is a firm hand in this matter. In principle, the spoon can be turned over with the usual side up, but it is better to save this side for the third layer. The second and third layers are best poured from a geyser or jigger so as not to pour too much! If you are preparing a shoter for the first time and do not know what ingredients you need, then in order to fill your hand, start with B-52, all the ingredients of which are poured into a third of the total volume of the cocktail, while it is not necessary to measure everything to the last drop.

The principle of making mixed cocktails is quite simple, the main thing is to hold on confidently. And with experience, you are sure to get more exotic and exclusive cocktails for your friends. And finally, a little tip - for a change, you can also play with the temperature difference by replacing one cocktail ingredient, for example, with hot espresso! Good luck at the counter! Create and enjoy not only your creations, but the process as a whole!

In this video you can see detailed recipes for Goa and Bee cocktails:

A variety of shot recipes form the basis of the assortment of any modern bar. It so happened historically, because in fact a shot is nothing more than alcohol served in a small volume, usually up to 60 ml.

The name appeared due to the way of drinking such a drink - quickly, in one gulp. And if the alcohol is very strong, then the effect of its lightning-fast ingestion is akin to a weapon salvo. The English word shooter, from which the “shot” part was “cut off”, just translates as “shoot”, and figuratively means “to drink in one gulp”.

Alcohol shots

It is noteworthy that, despite the widespread use of shots, shots based on them appeared not so long ago - approximately in the 70s of the last century. Before that, from small glasses in one sip, they drank only undiluted alcohol in its pure form. Today, recipes for alcoholic shots can include several types of strong drinks, and their combinations with non-alcoholic ingredients.

Features of cocktail shot recipes

Such mixes are made in special glasses, which are called shots. But sometimes small glasses or glasses are also used. The standard volume of such dishes is 50-60 ml. There are also double shots, which are served in larger containers - up to 100 ml. In the bars of Canada, Estonia, Finland, Hungary, Italy, Japan, the USA you can be offered mini-shots - portions of 20-30 ml.

Stack of shots

Small-sized cocktails are prepared in two ways:

  • or all ingredients are mixed in a shaker or directly in a stack;
  • or beautiful separate layers are made.

Today, another unusual cooking method has come into fashion -.

Alcoholic jelly shots

Mixed variations are simpler in execution. Here it is important to simply observe the proportions of the ingredients, although if you wish, you can experiment with them to your taste, for example, reduce the proportion of alcohol and increase the proportion of the non-alcoholic component if you do not want to get drunk quickly.

Layered cocktails are more difficult to make, there are many different tricks here:

  • the very first you need to pour a drink with the highest density, for example, thick liquor, and on top - transparent alcohol;
  • portions of the ingredients must be measured using a measuring cup, and not poured by eye - as a result, a composition of several components may simply not fit into a glass;
  • it is easiest to create layers with a bar spoon with a wide scoop, which, as it were, covers the bottom layer, but you can also use improvised means - a knife with a wide blade or an ordinary teaspoon.

Layered alcoholic cocktails

The recipe of mini-cocktails always includes high-grade drinks, so in the end, the strength of the mix is still at least 20-25%. Therefore, it is not recommended to drink many shots at a time. 2-3 will be enough. It is not customary to savor such drinks, they are swallowed immediately, so that later, on the tongue, taste the combination of flavors.

Basic Options

Alcoholic shots at home are easy to prepare, even layered. You just have to get your hands on them. Pour drinks on a bar spoon or knife blade very carefully and slowly, in a thin stream, do not splash with a generous hand.

But it’s still better to start self-study with the simplest shot recipes. These are ordinary mixes of a small amount of alcohol and juice. For example, you can prepare an apple shot, for which we take fruit fresh - 35 ml and vodka - 25 ml, mix them directly in a pile and sprinkle cinnamon on top.

Another option is the “Royal Shot”: mix 30 ml of white with 30 ml of strawberry syrup in a shaker, put fresh strawberries on the bottom of the glass and pour the drink on it.

royal shot

The most famous

It is worth noting that almost all classic shot recipes do not differ in overly complex composition or cooking technology. But many of them look very impressive in the end. This can be attributed to their main advantages, in addition to the uniqueness of the flavor composition, which is formed due to sometimes completely unexpected combinations of ingredients.
